Television advertising costs a great deal of money. If the brand that you are thinking about buying is advertised on TV, then you will be paying for the company’s advertising budget. Of course, all companies advertise, to some degree and that is included in your cost. But, you can bet that a highly advertised product costs two or three times more than another brand that is just as good.

Some EPA DHA fish oil bears the name of popular diet doctors or a celebrity spokesperson. While those may be good brands, you area also paying for the company’s right to use the names of those spokespeople. As with the brands promoted on TV, you will be paying more than necessary.
What Is the Total Omega-3 Content and the Percentage of Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) In Each Capsule?
1000mg or a gram of fat is the typical content of a basic gel cap. Only a portion of that is omega-3 fat. It is not the oils themselves that are beneficial, but the omega-3 fatty acids in them that are good for our health.
A good brand of EPA DHA fish oil will provide a minimum of 500mg or a half gram of omega-3s per every gram of total fat. The DHA content will account for 280mg or 28% and the EPA content will account for at least 120mg.
DPA is another fatty acid that may be listed. Research indicates that it may contribute to overall cardiovascular health. Some of the better brands contain 50mg or so of that fatty acid.

What Is the Degree of Anti-Inflammatory Activity?
Few manufacturers have their supplements tested for anti-inflammatory activity, because the research is unclear about whether there is any. While most researchers believe that omega-3s may reduce inflammation in the body, they believe that this occurs because they compete with omega-6s, which have inflammatory activity. In other words, some researchers believe that the supplements do not have anti-inflammatory activity, per se.
But, in a recent analysis, the Wellington School of Medicine found that the oils do have some anti-inflammatory activity, but the degree varies. So, if you want the most for your money, look for EPA DHA fish oil that has been tested. It just makes good sense.
